Make friends inSouthbank.

Southbank is thousands of apartments stacked over an arts precinct, and it may be the easiest suburb in Melbourne to live a whole year in without learning a name. A standing weekly table is the antidote: the same five people, the same night, every week.

What is Hey Sini?

Hey Sini

noun

Hey Sini is a weekly social club for making friends as an adult in Melbourne. It seats five compatible people near each other at the same table, on the same night, every week for six weeks, and then the table becomes theirs. It is friendship-first, not a dating app, and it opens neighbourhood by neighbourhood, starting around Carlton.

THE SUBURB

Why a Southbank table.

The river promenade and the arts precinct are the public face: Hamer Hall on the water, the Arts Centre spire, the NGV over on St Kilda Road, the Melbourne Recital Centre and the theatres along Southbank Boulevard. Behind them rise some of the densest apartment towers in the country, filling with people who moved in for the location and arrived without a crew.

It is a suburb of performers, hospitality rosters and city workers home late: the University of Melbourne's Southbank campus (the VCA and the Conservatorium) sits on Sturt Street, and the precinct keeps half the suburb working nights. Flinders Street Station is a walk across Princes Bridge and the route 1 tram runs along Sturt Street, so a standing Southbank table is easy to keep whatever your hours.

WHO IT IS FOR

Made for Southbank, specifically.

  • Apartment-tower residents who have never met a neighbour
  • VCA and Conservatorium students at the Southbank campus
  • Performers, crew and arts workers who keep show hours
  • Hospitality and precinct shift workers whose weekend lands midweek
  • City workers who cross Princes Bridge home and stop there

HOW IT WORKS HERE

One match, then the same five, every week.

Getting there
Flinders Street Station is a walk across Princes Bridge; the St Kilda Road trams stop at the arts precinct; the route 1 tram runs along Sturt Street.
Nearby study

The rhythm
Five compatible people near you, the same night, every week for six weeks. We re-seat you if it is not right.
The cost
Free to join. A founding seat is $19/mo, locked for life (it is $22/mo after). You pay your own bill at the table.

A Southbank table tends to land back from the promenade: a quiet kitchen on Southbank Boulevard or Sturt Street, or a long table just over the river off Flinders Lane. We suggest the spot via Google Maps; the five of you confirm it. We never book it or take venue money.

REAL PLACES TO MEET

Rooms in Southbank that work for five.

Each read one way: could five people who just met hear each other, fit around one table, and want to stay? We suggest, we never book.

SOUTHBANK QUESTIONS

Before you sit down.

I work nights in the precinct. Can I keep a weekly table?

Yes. You pick the one night your roster actually allows and we seat you with people who chose the same. Midweek nights are normal here, not the exception, and if your roster changes we reseat you on a night that fits.

Isn't Southbank just tourists and towers?

At street level on the promenade, often. Above it live thousands of residents, most of them newer to Melbourne than they let on. A table gives five of them a standing local night back from the crowds.
