THE HOUSE

The short version of every settling-in thread we have ever read: get a myki and set up auto top-up before anything else, because the city runs on trams. Learn the free tram zone boundaries so you stop paying for CBD hops. Pick your library branch (State Library for the room, your local for the quiet). If you are choosing a suburb, walk it on a weeknight at 7pm, not a Saturday morning: that is the version you will actually live in. Then the part nobody writes down: the city is easy to move through and strangely hard to land in. Most people who arrived alone say the same thing, that the first three months were galleries and laneways by themselves. The fix is not more events. It is one repeated thing on one repeated night. That is the whole reason Hey Sini exists, but the advice stands even if you never sit with us: pick a night, protect it, repeat it. What do you wish someone had told you in week one? Reply below, this thread is the one we point every newcomer at.

Which night can you actually keep?

THE HOUSE

Not which night sounds nice. Which night survives your real week: the late meeting, the gym, the phone call home across time zones. Melbourne tables run every night of the week, and the single best predictor of a table that lasts six weeks is that its five people picked a night they could genuinely defend. Tell the board your suburb and your night. Public demand shows as counts, never names, and when enough people near you say the same night, that corner opens.

The room test: could five strangers hear each other?

THE HOUSE

Every place we list on the neighbourhood pages is read one way: could five people who just met settle in, hear each other, and want to stay? That kills most of the famous rooms instantly. The band room is great; it is not a first-table room. The tiny bar with the queue is great; you cannot fit five. What passes: a long table you can book-ish (we never book, but the table can), a back room, a beer hall bench, a cafe that does not flip tables at 45 minutes. Post the rooms in your suburb that pass the test. Real places only, and say WHY it works: noise, table shape, price of a first round.

The Indonesia-Melbourne bridge: both directions

THE HOUSE

A lot of Hey Sini lives on the corridor between Jakarta and Melbourne: students who came one way, workers who went the other, families split across both. This is the thread for the practical crossings: what you wish you had packed, how you kept friendships alive across a three-hour time difference, where to find the food that tastes like the other city. In English or Bahasa, both welcome. Satu syarat: praktis, bukan nostalgia doang (oke, nostalgia juga boleh).
